Iguana Breeding Tips for Beginners
Almost every one is keen to have a pet, but not all, with the exception of children perhaps, would care for an iguana. Some have taken on iguana breeding as an effort to ‘birth’ their own pet, which may not be all that hard, if you have the know-how and patience. Breeding your own reptiles can bring in a good profit for the more exotic of species.
There are several steps to take if you wish to consider iguana breeding. First, you will need to prepare a nest for your iguana. This can be wooden or plastic containers that are filled with soil, dirt or play sand, which allows the female to nestle the eggs into. The best medium for the container nest is vermiculite which has a good moisture content to keep the eggs protected from dehydration. You can find vermiculite on sale at the bottom of this page.
Instructions: DIY Incubator for Successful Iguana Breeding
The proper incubators for iguana breeding can also be purchased if homemade ones are not conducive or unavailable. There are many kinds available at your local pet shops or even online. A good one should be designed as it can affect the iguana’s behavior; the female tends to be hyper prior to laying their eggs while the male is quite territorial. We have a link to our DIY incubator page so check it out for steps to creating your very own unique homemade model.
The most important stage in iguana breeding is to monitor its hatching, as eggs can hatch rather quickly with or without its egg sack. Some may prefer to hide back into their shell for a few days before coming out fully; iguana babies should not be forced out of their shells until they are ready. If the babies are bothered, they may come out together with the big yolks which may be detrimental to their survival. Some may even not hatch or may be deformed.
